Program Profile

About the Nitrogen Program

Nitrogen inputs must be kept in balance with other essential nutrients to achieve optimum plant nutrition while meeting yield goals, closing existing attainable yield gaps, improving and maintaining soil fertility, and sustaining healthy soil conditions; all while also protecting water and air quality. IPNI's global nitrogen program, and the integrated regional nutrient management research and outreach activities, center around the economic, environmental, and social pillars of sustainability; emphasizing 4R (right source at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place) nutrient stewardship.
